“Get all the advice and instruction you can, so you will be wise the rest of your life.”  Proverbs 19:20 NLT

Are there things God cannot do?

There is that age old riddle that someone will always bring up. “Can God create a rock so big that He Himself can’t lift it?” A question without an answer, not because it cast doubt on God’s ability, but because it is a circular argument without an answer! It is a waste of time to try and think it through.  But are there some things that God cannot do?  The answer is yes.  Among them.

God cannot lie
God cannot change

And particularly relevant to today’s devotion.

God cannot learn

God cannot lie, change or learn, not because of His limitations, but because it is against His nature.

This should not be a surprise to anyone, but we are not like that!  God created us so that we have the ability to lie, the ability to change and wonderfully so, the ability to learn.

In fact it would be a lie to think that we know it all, because in fact we don’t. In relationship to all there is to know, we don’t  know much.

And if learning has the ability to change us for the better, what should we do?  Should we relax and settle into a world of ignorance, or should we pursue the wonderful world of learning.

Each year I make a commitment to read and learn, it has been life giving in these uncertain times. I use Good Reads to set a goal and keep myself accountable. The number you set as your goal isn’t as important as the practice of regular reading and regular learning.

This week make the commitment to learn and be wise the rest of your life. If you get a chance, drop me a line if you make a learning commitment, I would love to hear about it.

In His Hands,

John
