“Lazy people consider themselves smarter than seven wise counselors.” Proverbs 26:16 NLT

It’s puzzling how most people could consider themselves above average, and even more puzzling why lazy people could consider themselves smarter than wise counselors.

What is the message in this for us?  When you think that you know all that you need to know about a particular issue, recognize that you probably don’t.

For some reason swimming comes to mind. Just because I have figured out a series of limb movements to keep me from sinking does not mean that I could swim competitively.  In fact, swimming is one of those activities where you need instruction to get better and more efficient.

I recall in college trying to get faster in the pool by just working harder but made only slight improvements. It isn’t just strength and effort that makes a good swimmer, it is also technique. Competitive swimmers engage coaches and seek wise counselors to help them improve.

God has given us the ability to develop, learn and gain wisdom. The lazy don’t take advantage of those abilities, and yet judge themselves to know as much as anyone.

This week don’t be lazy and be a good steward of what God has given you. Seek wisdom from others.

In His Hands,

John
