“Don’t gaze at the wine, seeing how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup, how smoothly it goes down. For in the end it bites like a poisonous snake; it stings like a viper. You will see hallucinations, and you will say crazy things.” Proverbs 23:31‭-‬33 NLT

I remember watching the re-runs of Get Smart as a boy. The antics of Maxwell Smart as Agent 86 who would struggle using the technology given to him and had the famous line “missed it by that much” still sticks in my mind decades later.

What I didn’t realize as a boy but understand now is the parody of the show with “Control” battling “Kaos”.

Control was fleeting for agent 86 but is something that many of us strive for now.  What is funny that while we strive for control in most areas, we may give it away in others.  Surrendering control to the Lord is wise. Giving away control to a substance is not.

Alcohol has captured too many and has led to too many poor decisions. Proverbs even tells us that it will change our view of reality and have us “see hallucinations and say crazy things” turning our lives into chaos.

I am uncertain if the Get Smart show intended to provide anything other than entertainment, but the message of control being good and chaos bad is still one for us to think about.

This week be in control of your relationship with alcohol and get help if it has led to chaos.

In His Hands,
