“Don’t waste your breath on fools, for they will despise the wisest advice.” Proverbs 23:9 NLT

Wouldn’t it be great if we really could push a button to change something?

It’s just not that easy.  What isn’t? To use a combination of words to have someone change their minds about something. Yet so many continue to try to do so. With just a quick glance at social media you will find people who continue to push buttons and make endless posts arguing about issues. But you rarely discover that social media posts do anything but enflame the opposition. This week’s Proverb advises us to spare the effort of trying to offer advice to fools.

As believers we have a responsibility to speak the truth in love (Eph 4:15), but thankfully God is the One Who is responsible for results.  He is able to do what we cannot.

Imagine what a responsibility it would be if the results were up to us; to come up with the right combination of words and phrases to change the heart of another. It would be too great of a responsibility to bear.

In my years of counseling and ministry, I have observed a few principles:

– Counsel that is unsolicited is unheeded

– You can’t reason with and unreasonable person

– Intellectual proof seldom overcomes emotional attachment

Understanding these principles has been helpful in knowing when to continue pursuing an issue and when it is time to leave it to the Lord.

This week passionately devote your efforts to helping others, but don’t waste your breath on fools.

In His Hands,

John
