“Haughty eyes, a proud heart, and evil actions are all sin.” Proverbs 21:4 NLT

The dictionary defines haughty as “arrogantly superior and disdainful.” There is a progression of sin in this verse. It starts with haughty eyes, leads to a proud heart, and then ultimately evil actions.

The progression begin by looking at another and having some sense of superiority over them, then allowing that sense to settle in your heart and ultimately act upon it. Whole wars and movements start here, and sadly progress to some of the most horrific actions in history. We would be foolish to think that we are above it. It is important for us to stop it before it starts and progresses in our own hearts.

Pride can be so deceptive but it is anchored in selfishness. Paul gives us the antidote. Think of others as better than ourselves.

“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.” Philippians 2:3‭-‬4 NLT

This week, guard your hearts against any feelings of superiority that you may have over another.

In His Hands,

John
